Pick up is from your Melbourne hotel of from Federation Square (this will be pre-arranged) between 8am and 8.30 am in a specialised 4WD tour bus.
We travel north along the Hume Highway which is the main road linking Melbourne to Sydney. We turn off the highway to take the “snow road” as it is locally called and stop for an early lunch in the beautiful town of Bright nestled at the foot of the Great Dividing Range. There is time to explore the boutique shops and eateries before we head up into the iconic “High Country”.
After lunch we drive though the Ovens Valley along the Great Alpine Road through small towns with the mountains towering overhead and begin our climb up to Mount Hotham.
As we near the summit of Mount Hotham the views are stunning with alpine wildflowers blooming and the snow gums with their gnarled forms making for a striking foreground to the mountains in the distance. You’ll see the lonely peak of Mount Feathertop dominating the view north whilst dark valleys plunge below us.
As we reach the ski resort of Dinner Plain and check into our hotel, we take a walk down a track to Precipice Plain to stand on the cliffs above a stunning view of the Dargo Valley as it plunges below us. Listen for the sound of the hidden waterfalls while eagles ride on the thermals above us, maybe catch a fleeting glimpse of wild brumbies and hear the lonely call of the mountain dingoes. This is a truly awesome place.
We stay the night in the High Plains Hotel in the Dinner Plain Village where you can walk around and soak up the beauty of the mountains.
After breakfast we continue along the Great Alpine Road through the valley belonging to Cobungra Cattle Station stopping along the way to view Mt. Kosciuszko; Australia’s highest mountain far off in the distance and then into the tiny mountain town of Omeo.
We then take the High Plains Road as it clings to the mountain side above the wild Mitta Mitta River far below. We stop at Anglers Rest for a fortifying coffee then through the old gold mining area of Glen Wills and the Glen Valley. Stunning scenery abounds as you ponder the lengths and difficulties people endured in their quest to find gold.
We pass by the abandoned town site of Sunnyside where there was once a thriving tent city of miners and their families until we reach the summit walk to Mt. Wills. Carrying our packed lunches we walk one hour to the summit of Mt Wills with its fabulous views of Mt Bogong and the valley of the wild Mitta Mitta River.
We return to the vehicle and take the old gold coach road into the Omeo Valley, we cross over Mt Blowhard for a breathtaking view of the remote mountains and then drive across the dry lake bed of Lake Omeo and then to the small town of Omeo to enjoy a hearty dinner and stay in the historic Golden Age Hotel.
We depart Omeo and drive along the Great Alpine Road with its precipitous drops to the Tambo River far below. A coffee stop beside the river allows you soak up the isolation of the mountains and the pristine alpine air.
Names of iconic high country townships like Swifts Creek, Hinomunjie, Doctor’s Flat and Ensay will become familiar to you as we wind our way out of the mountains.
We take lunch in Bairnsdale before we head back to Melbourne along the Princes Highway and drop you off around 6 pm.
